There's something special about fall in Southern Arizona.

While much of the country is preparing for freezing temperatures, shorter days and winter coats, Tucson is entering one of its most enjoyable seasons.

The mornings invite you outdoors. Restaurant patios become gathering places. Farmers markets fill with local flavors. And those spectacular desert sunsets remind us why so many people choose to spend their winters here.

Whether you're a returning snowbird, a longtime Tucson resident, a first-time visitor or someone considering making Southern Arizona home, this is the perfect time to rediscover everything our area has to offer.

I'm Robert Craig, REALTOR® with Real Broker, and welcome to Week 3 of Tucson Sunshine Season—your weekly guide to the people, places and experiences that make Southern Arizona such an incredible place to live.

This week, let's plan the perfect Tucson fall weekend.

🌄 Saturday Morning: Start With the Mountains

There's no better way to begin a Southern Arizona weekend than enjoying our spectacular mountain scenery.

One of my favorite recommendations is Catalina State Park, located near Oro Valley at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Whether you prefer a relaxed nature walk, photography or a more challenging hike, the setting is hard to beat.

Towering saguaros, dramatic mountain views and beautiful desert landscapes create the kind of experience that makes people fall in love with Arizona.

Another excellent choice is Sabino Canyon in the Catalina Foothills, where visitors can explore desert scenery and enjoy the natural beauty of the canyon.

And here's something I always remind people:

You don't have to be an experienced hiker to appreciate Southern Arizona.

Sometimes a peaceful morning walk, fresh air and a mountain view are all you need.

Remember to bring water, wear appropriate shoes and check trail conditions before heading out.

🛍️ Saturday Afternoon: Discover Local Markets

One of the things that makes Tucson special is its strong sense of community.

Our farmers markets are about more than shopping. They're opportunities to meet local growers, discover unique products and experience the character of Southern Arizona.

If you're spending Saturday in Oro Valley, consider visiting the Heirloom Farmers Market at Steam Pump Ranch.

You'll find a wonderful opportunity to explore locally grown food, artisan products and the community atmosphere that makes Oro Valley so appealing.

For a special seasonal outing, Heirloom Farmers Markets has also scheduled a Plant & Seed Swap at Oro Valley on Saturday, October 24.

It's a great excuse to get outside, explore the market and enjoy a relaxing morning.

My suggestion?

Pick up something fresh, grab a coffee and spend a little time appreciating the mountain scenery.

Sometimes the simplest activities make the best memories.

🍽️ Saturday Evening: Patio Dining, Tucson Style

If you've spent time in Southern Arizona during the fall, you already know one of our best-kept lifestyle secrets:

Patio season is a big deal here.

Imagine enjoying dinner outdoors while the mountains change color in the evening light.

Or meeting friends for a casual meal beneath the stars.

From downtown Tucson to Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley and Marana, outdoor dining is part of what makes living here special.

Downtown destinations such as Mercado San Agustín and the historic Hotel Congress area offer distinctive settings for dining and spending time with friends.

You can enjoy local flavors, explore the surrounding neighborhoods and experience a side of Tucson that goes well beyond golf courses and desert trails.

And if you're visiting from Chicago, Minnesota or another place where October often means chilly evenings, eating dinner outside may feel like a little luxury.

Here, it's part of the lifestyle.

🌅 Don't Miss a Tucson Sunset

No perfect Tucson weekend would be complete without a desert sunset.

One of Southern Arizona's most memorable experiences is watching the sun disappear behind the Tucson Mountains.

Gates Pass is a well-known place to enjoy that view.

As the evening light changes, the mountains and desert landscape can take on remarkable shades of gold, orange, pink and purple.

It's a wonderful reminder that some of the best things about living in Southern Arizona don't require an expensive ticket or elaborate plans.

Just find a beautiful spot, enjoy the view and appreciate the moment.

Arrive with enough daylight to park safely, and remember that parking areas may close shortly after sunset.

☀️ Sunday Morning: Farmers Market and Coffee

If Saturday is for exploring, Sunday is for slowing down.

One of my favorite ideas for a relaxed Tucson Sunday is the Rillito Park Farmers Market.

Located near First Avenue and River Road, this popular market brings together local farmers, ranchers and food producers.

During the fall and winter season, the market operates on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It's a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering local foods, shopping for fresh ingredients and enjoying the community atmosphere.

And here's my advice:

Don't rush.

Walk around, talk to the vendors, discover something new and enjoy being outside.

That's what Sunshine Season is all about.

🌵 Robert's Weekend Pick: October 24–25

If you're looking for an easy weekend plan, here's my suggestion.

Saturday, October 24

Start with a scenic morning around Oro Valley and the Catalina Mountains.

Visit Steam Pump Ranch and check out the farmers market's seasonal Plant & Seed Swap.

Head over to Rillito Park fo the Annual Celtic Festival. Bagpipes, beer, whiskey, dancing its all there. This will be my 4 year going and enjoy it more each year. You have to check out Scotsfare Bakery who makes the most delicious scottish pies!! If you havent tried one you are missing out. Its delicious with a pint of Guiness!!:)

Sunday, October 25

Visit the Rillito Park Farmers Market for fresh local food and a relaxing morning.

Spend the afternoon exploring Tucson's west side, then consider ending your weekend with a desert sunset near Gates Pass.

No complicated schedule.

No rushing from place to place.

Just mountains, markets, local food, beautiful scenery and time to enjoy Southern Arizona.

That's my idea of a perfect Tucson fall weekend.

🏡 What Does Your Perfect Tucson Lifestyle Look Like?

Here's where my passion for Southern Arizona connects with what I do professionally.

After more than two decades helping people buy and sell real estate, I've learned that choosing the right home isn't just about bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.

It's about how you want to live.

Some people want to wake up near hiking trails.

Others dream about golf course views.

Some love the energy of downtown Tucson, while others prefer the peaceful desert surroundings of Dove Mountain.

You might want a gated community, a low-maintenance winter home, a larger property or a 55+ community with activities and amenities.

Every part of Southern Arizona offers something different.

And that's why I always say:

Don't begin with the house. Begin with the lifestyle.

Once we understand what matters most to you, finding the right home and community becomes much easier.

Thinking About Making Southern Arizona Home?

Maybe you're visiting Tucson for the winter.

Maybe you've been coming here for years and are beginning to wonder whether it's time to stay longer.

Or perhaps you already own a home here and are considering downsizing, relocating or making a change.

Whatever your situation, I'm happy to help you explore your options.

I work with buyers and sellers throughout Tucson, Oro Valley, Catalina Foothills, Marana, Dove Mountain, SaddleBrooke, Green Valley, Vail, Tanque Verde and surrounding Southern Arizona communities.

My approach is simple: local knowledge, straightforward advice, consistent communication and personal attention from our first conversation through closing.
