If you're arriving in Southern Arizona from Chicago, Minnesota, the Pacific Northwest, the East Coast—or just about anywhere that owns a serious winter coat—I have some good news:

Your outdoor season is just getting started. ☀️

October marks the beginning of what I like to call Tucson's Sunshine Season.

From October through April, Southern Arizona really comes alive. Cooler temperatures mean patios fill up, golf courses get busy, hiking boots come out, snowbirds return, and our calendar starts filling with festivals, live music, arts and community events.

I'm Robert Craig, REALTOR® with Real Broker, and after years of helping people buy and sell homes in Southern Arizona, I've learned something important:

Choosing where to live isn't just about the house. It's about the life you get to live when you walk out the front door.

That's what this new weekly series is all about.

🌵 Welcome to Tucson's Sunshine Season

While much of the country is preparing to spend more time indoors, we're doing almost exactly the opposite.

This is when mornings become perfect for walking and hiking. Afternoons can mean golf, cycling or exploring. And evenings?

Those are for patios, sunsets, live music and dinner under the Arizona sky.

Whether you're a longtime Tucson resident, returning snowbird or visiting because you're wondering whether Southern Arizona could someday become home, October through April is a wonderful time to experience our lifestyle.

⛳ Golf Clubs, Meet Sunshine

Southern Arizona and golf go together exceptionally well.

Oro Valley, Marana, Dove Mountain, Catalina Foothills and greater Tucson offer beautiful desert courses where the scenery can occasionally make you forget what's written on your scorecard.

Almost.

One of the things I recommend to people considering a winter home here is to think beyond the golf course itself.

Do you want to live in a golf community?

Would you rather have several courses within a short drive?

Do you want a private club lifestyle or the flexibility of public courses?

Would your ideal day include 18 holes followed by happy hour overlooking the mountains?

Those lifestyle questions can be just as important as bedrooms and bathrooms when you're choosing where to live.

🥾 The Mountains Are Calling

Tucson also offers something that's difficult to appreciate until you've experienced it firsthand:

You can have a completely different outdoor adventure almost every day.

Near Oro Valley, Catalina State Park provides a spectacular introduction to the Sonoran Desert and Santa Catalina Mountains.

In the Catalina Foothills, Sabino Canyon is one of those places I think everyone should experience. You can walk, hike or simply enjoy the scenery.

Head west and you have Saguaro National Park and the Tucson Mountains.

Prefer wheels to hiking boots? Tucson's extensive Loop gives walkers and cyclists another way to enjoy the outdoors.

And you don't have to conquer a mountain.

Sometimes an early-morning walk surrounded by saguaros is all you need.

🎨 Tucson Has an Artistic Side, Too

Sunshine Season isn't only about hiking and golf.

Fall kicks off an incredible stretch of festivals, galleries, performances, outdoor concerts, street fairs and community events.

Downtown Tucson and Fourth Avenue bring a completely different energy than Oro Valley or the Catalina Foothills.

And that's something I want to highlight throughout this series.

Tucson isn't one lifestyle.

That's one of its strengths.

You can spend Friday evening downtown listening to live music, Saturday morning hiking in Oro Valley and Sunday playing golf in Marana.

🍽️ Don't Forget the Food

Tucson also happens to be a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, the first U.S. city to receive that designation.

Translation?

Come hungry.

From Sonoran Mexican food and neighborhood favorites to fine dining and mountain-view patios, food is an important part of experiencing Tucson.

And when the weather turns beautiful, eating outside becomes part of the experience.

There's something particularly enjoyable about having dinner on a patio in January while friends in colder climates are texting you photographs of their driveway covered in snow.

Try not to gloat.

At least not excessively.

🌅 Robert's Weekend Pick

Pick one part of Tucson you've never really explored and spend half a day there.

Try Oro Valley one weekend.

Catalina Foothills the next.

Then Downtown Tucson, Marana, Dove Mountain or the Tucson Mountains.

Have coffee there. Walk around. Find a trail. Eat lunch. Drive through a few neighborhoods. Stay for sunset.

If you're thinking about moving here, don't just tour houses.

Experience the community.

That's how you begin discovering where you actually belong.

🏡 Thinking About Living in Southern Arizona?

If you're considering Tucson, Oro Valley, Catalina Foothills, Marana or Dove Mountain as a full-time home, winter residence, retirement destination or second home, I'd be happy to help you explore.

We'll talk about more than houses.

We'll talk about the lifestyle you want, where you spend your time and which Southern Arizona communities might fit that lifestyle best.

Because finding the right home isn't simply about square footage.

It's about finding the life you want to live.
