If you're trading snow shovels for golf clubs, winter coats for hiking shoes, and gray skies for Arizona sunshine...
Welcome back. ☀️🌵
October is here, and across Tucson, Oro Valley, Catalina Foothills, Marana and Dove Mountain, we're beginning one of my favorite times of the year.
Our seasonal residents are returning. Patios are filling up. Golf clubs are coming out of storage. Hiking mornings are getting more comfortable. Arts and entertainment calendars are filling up.
And Southern Arizona starts feeling like Southern Arizona again.
I'm Robert Craig, REALTOR® with Real Broker, and this is Week 2 of my Tucson Sunshine Season series—your weekly guide to enjoying the lifestyle that makes this such a special place to call home, whether that's 12 months a year or just during the months when everyone back home is wondering why you keep sending them pictures of blue skies.
☀️ Snowbird Season Is More Than Escaping Winter
People sometimes think being a snowbird simply means getting away from cold weather.
I think that's only half the story.
The real attraction is what you get to do once you're here.
You can start your morning walking through the Sonoran Desert, meet friends for lunch on a patio, spend the afternoon playing golf, and still have time for live music, theater or dinner downtown.
And tomorrow?
You can do something completely different.
That's what makes Southern Arizona's winter lifestyle so appealing.
⛳ Golf Clubs Out. Sunshine On.
For golfers arriving back in town, Southern Arizona offers an incredible variety of choices—from municipal and daily-fee courses to resort and private-club experiences.
Around Oro Valley, you'll find beautiful desert golf with the Santa Catalina Mountains providing the backdrop.
Head toward Marana and Dove Mountain and the desert becomes part of the experience itself.
Catalina Foothills offers another style of desert golf, while courses throughout greater Tucson give players plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy our winter weather.
Robert's tip: If you're returning for the season, don't play the same courses all winter. Pick a few you've never experienced and make this the year you discover a new favorite.
🥾 Hiking Season Is Waking Up
Golf isn't your thing?
Perfect.
Grab your walking shoes.
Catalina State Park, near Oro Valley, is one of my favorite places to recommend because you don't have to be an expert hiker to enjoy it. There are opportunities ranging from relaxed desert walks to more challenging adventures beneath the Santa Catalina Mountains.
On the Catalina Foothills side, Sabino Canyon is another Southern Arizona classic. Hike, walk, enjoy the scenery or simply spend a morning surrounded by some of the landscape that makes Tucson special.
And here's something I tell visitors:
You don't need to conquer a mountain to enjoy Tucson outdoors.
A gentle morning walk surrounded by saguaros followed by coffee with a mountain view absolutely counts.
🎨 Saturday Morning: Experience Oro Valley
Here's one of my specific Sunshine Season picks for this week.
On Saturday, October 10, consider spending the morning around historic Steam Pump Ranch in Oro Valley.
It's the kind of outing I love because it combines several pieces of Southern Arizona living: local history, the Sonoran Desert, community activities, art and those beautiful Pusch Ridge views.
Make a morning of it.
Grab some coffee. Explore the ranch. Enjoy the surroundings. Then stay in Oro Valley for lunch.
Sometimes the best Arizona days aren't complicated.
🎬 Saturday Evening: Stay Outside
One of the little luxuries of Southern Arizona living is that fall evenings give us another excuse to stay outdoors.
Oro Valley's Movies in the Park is scheduled for Saturday evening, October 10, at Riverfront Park.
Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy an outdoor movie under the Arizona sky.
If you're visiting from somewhere where October evenings usually require heavy coats, this may be one of those moments when you remember exactly why you came to Tucson for the winter.
🎶 Make Time for Music, Arts & Entertainment
Southern Arizona isn't only about golf courses and hiking trails.
Tucson has an active arts, music, theater and entertainment scene—and Sunshine Season is a great time to explore it.
Check the calendars at Tucson's downtown theaters and music venues. Visit galleries. Find a concert. Explore a local art market.
One of my favorite things about Tucson is that you can spend the morning on a desert trail and the evening listening to live music.
You don't have to choose between outdoor living and culture. Here, you can have both.
🌵 Robert's Weekend Pick
If I were planning one easy Sunshine Season day this week, here's what I'd do:
Saturday, October 10 — Make it an Oro Valley day.
Start your morning around Steam Pump Ranch.
Enjoy the local activities and Pusch Ridge views.
Grab lunch somewhere in Oro Valley.
Take the afternoon slowly—maybe explore a neighborhood you've always wondered about or simply enjoy a patio.
Then head to Riverfront Park that evening for Movies in the Park.
No rushing.
No complicated itinerary.
Just sunshine, mountains, community and an evening outdoors.
That's Southern Arizona living.
🏡 Are You Back for the Winter—or Thinking About Staying Longer?
Every year, seasonal residents eventually start asking an interesting question:
“Why do we keep leaving?”
Sometimes that leads to purchasing a winter home.
Sometimes it's downsizing into something easier to maintain.
Sometimes it's moving from seasonal residency to full-time Arizona living.
And sometimes people simply want to understand which community fits them best.
Oro Valley feels different from Catalina Foothills.
Catalina Foothills feels different from Marana.
Dove Mountain offers another experience entirely.
And that's why I always tell people:
Don't begin with the house. Begin with the lifestyle.
Where do you want to golf?
Where do you like to hike?
Do you want restaurants nearby?
Mountain views?
A gated community?
A lock-and-leave home?
A 55+ community?
Arts and entertainment?
Easy access to trails?
Once we understand how you want to live, finding the right part of Southern Arizona becomes much easier.
If you're spending the winter here—or thinking about making Southern Arizona home—I'd be happy to help you explore.
